Happy July to everyone! With all this sun and warmth, we have been quite busy at the Greenhouse. Here are a few highlights from June:

  • We toured Prince Charles through the Greenhouse and had a great conversation around food sovereignty in Nunavut (check out the pictures on our facebook page)
  • We brought three hydroponic grow towers from the schools to their summer home. Thank you Joamie School and Inuksuk High School for lending us your towers for the summer!
  • We had our first harvest of lettuces, kale, swiss chard, bok choy, and herbs!

We have been having so much success with our weekend open houses that we are expanding to have a weeknight open house as well. The times are:

  • Thursdays 5:15-6:45
  • Saturdays 1-4

Everyone is welcome to come by the Greenhouse during these times. We will be working on various tasks including: watering, weeding, HARVESTING, seeding, working on our compost, and building new beds. Informal workshops around these topics will occur based on interest. If you have an interest in a specific area, please let the board members know and we’d be happy to work with you on a special project or develop a learn-to workshop.

Update on membership fees: The Iqaluit Community Greenhouse Society is meant to be a place where everyone can come together to learn more about growing food, sample different types of veggies, and enjoy a warm and sunny place in town.

In the past we have charged a $75 membership, which gave access to the greenhouse and a share of the harvest. We also donated harvest to groups like the shelters and the Iqaluit Food Centre. We want the greenhouse to be inclusive and open to all, so we will not be charging membership fees this year. Everyone is welcome to:

  • Come to open houses;
  • Participate in workshops;
  • Take home some veggies based on that day’s harvest and;
  • Make a donation if they wish.

We hope to see you over the summer! Please email with questions and we will do our best to respond quickly.
