The Board of Directors met Thursday evening in the greenhouse in order to plan for our first harvest and discovered that it needs to be sooner rather than later!  We will be holding a work party, barbecue and harvest at the greenhouse this Saturday (July 6) at noon.  There are some radishes ready to be picked, as well as three varieties of lettuce, kale and spinach.  We’ll be replanting some of the items that have been harvested and weeding and watering the rest.  There is wonderful growth in every bed, bin and pot and the Board is very excited!

Don’t forget…only paid members will be able to take home their share of the harvest.  If you have not yet paid, please ensure that you bring your membership application forms and cash or cheque to the greenhouse on Saturday.  Visit the membership information section of our greenhouse to download the forms, find out where you can bring your fees when we’re not at the greenhouse, or pay your fees online!

We have also set a tentative schedule for our summer work parties and harvests.  Keep up to date with the next event by following our “Upcoming Events” – just look to the right column on the main page.  You can also subscribe to the Iqaluit Community Greenhouse Society Google Calendar.

We will have hot dogs, veggie dogs, condiments and buns on hand for the barbecue.  Bring additional items such as drinks, salads or dessert to share with your fellow gardeners.

In addition to all this, we will be holding a second weed identification workshop, explain expectations for members in regards to watering the crops and will teach you how to make a wonderful salad vinaigrette with some of the fresh herbs growing in the greenhouse.  So come out, smell the fresh produce, feel the warmth of the greenhouse and get your hands dirty!

Don’t forget to watch Northbeat on CBC North Friday, July 5 at 8 PM EDT.  We’ve been told our interview will be shown!

As more leaves are appearing on the plants, it is becoming easier to tell what is a plant and what is a weed.  As mentioned on Facebook earlier this week, you can come out this Saturday, June 22 at noon for a plant identification session followed by a work party to get rid of the weeds that are starting to appear.  We will also show you how to transplant seedlings, a skill that you can use inside and outside of the greenhouse.  There is also some work to do outside.

We will be collecting membership fees at the greenhouse from 12 PM to 1 PM.  You can also download this year’s membership forms from the website if you cannot make it on Saturday.

There will be hot dogs to barbecue, so bring some snacks to share!

Hope to see you there!

Edit:  The original posting incorrectly stated the date of the work party as June 15.  The correct date is June 22.

We’re almost ready to officially open the season!

There will be a work party at the greenhouse this Saturday (June 8) at noon. The snowfall and colder temperatures early this week didn’t affect the few plants that we managed to get into the ground and we’re almost ready to plant the full greenhouse. We will need to finish mixing the soil, washing the interior and exterior panels of the greenhouse, do a general tidy up and get a bit more planting done. If you have a wheelbarrow and/or rakes that you can bring along, please contact Stephen at to advise.

We will also have the barbecue ready to grill from 11:30 AM. We’ll supply the fuel – just bring your own grillables, utensils and something to eat on. If you’d like to bring a salad or another shareable item, feel free.

Information on payments for membership will be posted on the website soon. We will not be collecting membership fees this weekend.

The Iqaluit Community Greenhouse Society requests the presence of its members for the completion of our Annual General Meeting on Saturday August 6 at 2 PM in the Boardroom of the Nunavut Research Institute building.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the Board of Directors invites all members to a free barbecue social.  Come out for some great food prepared by your ICGS Board!
