Just a reminder of tomorrow’s regularly scheduled harvest at 5 PM. We expect there to be loads of produce, including peas, kale, Swiss chard, lettuce and more! See you there…

Don’t forget…it’s our regularly scheduled harvest day. See you just after 5!

Welcome to August and (knock on wood!) a bit of summer once more!

With the sun shining brightly, we’ll have to remember to check on the greenhouse to ensure the plants are being watered sufficiently. If you have signed up for the Operations Subcommittee, now’s your time to shine! Sign up for the watering schedule so we can take advantage of the sunshine and kickstart our new plants.

On a more serious note, please ensure that both the front and back doors are closed and locked securely once you leave the greenhouse. If you are having trouble getting the doors to lock, please speak to a board member or let us know via email as soon as possible.

As there has been slower growth with our lettuce crops, we will not be holding today’s supplementary greens harvest. We apologize for the inconvenience, but will see you on Monday, August 10 for our regularly scheduled work party/harvest.

Yesterday, we chatted with APTN’s Kent Driscoll about growing food in Iqaluit. Keep an eye on APTN News in the coming days for his report!

With a bit more water and sunshine, our lettuce crops will be ready for another harvest!

Even with the dreary weather in Iqaluit these past few weeks, our plants are thriving! To ensure that we get maximum productivity from all of our plants – primarily our greens – we will be holding additional harvests to keep the lettuce, spinach and kale healthy and happy. That means you can pick fresh food at the greenhouse every four days!

Our Google Calendar will be updated shortly to reflect the additional harvest parties. We realize that this may not last all summer, so always check the calendar for the most up to date events.

Don’t forget…we will be harvesting tomorrow from 5 PM to 7 PM. See you at the greenhouse to celebrate Nunavut Day!

July 8

We may not be growing something as spectacular as this flowered Canadian flag, but we think growing our own food in the arctic is still a pretty Canadian thing to do. Come on out to the greenhouse on Canada Day starting at 3 PM. This could be our first harvest of the summer!

Don’t forget to join us tomorrow for our regularly scheduled work party and harvest.  We start at 11 AM!

Keep an eye out for updates on the next harvest – we’re planning a barbecue and bake sale to coincide.

Thanks to everyone’s input last year, the ICGS was able to sort out a good starting plan for how to plant community-style.  This year, we’re looking for your input again.  The Board has come up with a list of seeds we’d like to purchase for this year’s growing season.  Let us know if we’re missing anything or if we need to change our percentages.  This list is based on the plants that grew successfully last year, as well as the types of produce that people were interested in.

First Plant

  • Radish – 10%
  • Carrots – 5%
  • Lettuce (includes spinach) – 45%
  • Beans – 15%
  • Peas – 15%
  • Kale – 10%

Second Plant

Many crops will require the full growing season, so only the radish and lettuce percentages will change.  Last year’s radish harvest was very successful on the first plant, moderately successful on the second plant, and unsuccessful on the third plant.  This season, we plan to decrease the second plant of radish to 5% (increasing the lettuce plot to 50%) and will not plant a third time.

Types of Seeds

The seeds we plan to purchase include:

  • Bok choy
  • Red radish
  • Daikon radish
  • Carrots
  • Leaf lettuce (red, green)
  • Swiss chard (rainbow)
  • Kale
  • Spinach (baby)
  • Bush beans
  • Snow peas

In addition to these seeds, we will be testing out a few other plants in small quantities:  beets, parsnip, and turnip.  We will also be planting potatoes in the cold frames again this year.

If you have any comments on this plan, please email us.  Don’t forget we’ll also have the pots on the shelves for planting your own seeds as well (herbs, small plants, etc.).

Keep an eye on the website for more information about upcoming events.  We’re tentatively scheduled for a greenhouse weekend on June 14 and 15 – Saturday is the plant day and Sunday is a car wash/BBQ fundraiser!  Stay tuned…

We’re looking for a few good bakers.  This Saturday, August 31 from 11 AM to 1 PM, the ICGS will be holding an end of the season bake sale and barbecue.  If you can donate some baked goods to the cause, please arrive by 10:30 AM so that we may price your items for sale.

This will coincide with a work party/harvest.  If you are in Iqaluit and haven’t seen the greenhouse before, come on down and check us out!  We’ll be harvesting potatoes, lettuce, spinach, kale, daikon radish and more.  Come and see how we grow food in the arctic.

For now, check out our August 23rd harvest pictures!
