Due to temperatures hovering just below freezing, the ICGS has decided to cancel today’s car wash.  Please keep an eye on the website for more information, as we are hoping to hold another on Father’s Day weekend in June.

Instead, we will be inviting new members and anyone interested in having a look at the greenhouse and learning about our organization to come out from 11 AM to 12 PM.  Several members of the Board will be there doing some prep work, beginning to clean up the grounds and if we can get our barbecue going, cooking up some burgers.  We can answer your questions, take your membership applications and let you know how you can help.

Come check us out!

Don’t forget…the ICGS is holding a car wash fundraiser on Saturday, May 17 from 10 AM to 2 PM at the Iqaluit Firehall.  That’s tomorrow!

We are still looking for volunteers to help with washing cars and barbecuing.  If you can donate a couple of hours, please let us know.

As the weather is still iffy in terms of temperature, this event may need to be postponed at the last minute.  The ICGS Board will be making the decision in the morning and will post to the website, Facebook and Twitter by 9:30 AM if we will need to postpone.  Keep your fingers crossed that temperatures reach above freezing!

The Iqaluit Community Greenhouse Society is looking for some help in a couple of different ways.

First, we will be participating in the rummage sale at Inuksuk High School this Saturday, February 1 between 11 AM and 3 PM.  The rummage sale will raise funds for the school’s Environmental Club trip to the Galapagos Islands and we are excited to help them reach their goals.  As a side benefit, we will be able to raise funds for our own cause as well.  We are looking for donations of items we can sell.  If you have any items you would like to get rid of, please contact the ICGS and let us know you will be bringing something.  Please bring your items to the school around 10:30 AM so we can begin selling them at 11 AM.

Second, Bernardin Canada has contacted us regarding a major publication that they are currently working on.  They are interested in speaking to farmers and growers across Canada regarding preserving and canning.  They are looking to chat about the area, specifically what products are grown, popular and local.  If you are interested, be sure to contact Suzanne.

Third, don’t forget about our annual survey!  If you haven’t filled it out, please give us your opinions!

We’re looking for a few good bakers.  This Saturday, August 31 from 11 AM to 1 PM, the ICGS will be holding an end of the season bake sale and barbecue.  If you can donate some baked goods to the cause, please arrive by 10:30 AM so that we may price your items for sale.

This will coincide with a work party/harvest.  If you are in Iqaluit and haven’t seen the greenhouse before, come on down and check us out!  We’ll be harvesting potatoes, lettuce, spinach, kale, daikon radish and more.  Come and see how we grow food in the arctic.

For now, check out our August 23rd harvest pictures!

Don’t forget about the regularly scheduled work party/harvest scheduled for Thursday, August 15 at 5:30 PM.

You never know what might be ready for harvest!

Hope to see you there…

We have now posted the upcoming schedule for work parties on the website.  Just look for the “Upcoming Events” listing in the right column of the main page.  It will list the next three events.  It is linked to the ICGS Google Calendar, which you can subscribe to.

This Sunday, we’ll be thinning out some of the smaller lettuce plants from the beds to make room for those plants that are growing well.  Bring your thinking caps too – we have a leak to deal with and need some ideas for a temporary fix!

Lots of room for new members.  Become a Member today!

The Board of Directors met Thursday evening in the greenhouse in order to plan for our first harvest and discovered that it needs to be sooner rather than later!  We will be holding a work party, barbecue and harvest at the greenhouse this Saturday (July 6) at noon.  There are some radishes ready to be picked, as well as three varieties of lettuce, kale and spinach.  We’ll be replanting some of the items that have been harvested and weeding and watering the rest.  There is wonderful growth in every bed, bin and pot and the Board is very excited!

Don’t forget…only paid members will be able to take home their share of the harvest.  If you have not yet paid, please ensure that you bring your membership application forms and cash or cheque to the greenhouse on Saturday.  Visit the membership information section of our greenhouse to download the forms, find out where you can bring your fees when we’re not at the greenhouse, or pay your fees online!

We have also set a tentative schedule for our summer work parties and harvests.  Keep up to date with the next event by following our “Upcoming Events” – just look to the right column on the main page.  You can also subscribe to the Iqaluit Community Greenhouse Society Google Calendar.

We will have hot dogs, veggie dogs, condiments and buns on hand for the barbecue.  Bring additional items such as drinks, salads or dessert to share with your fellow gardeners.

In addition to all this, we will be holding a second weed identification workshop, explain expectations for members in regards to watering the crops and will teach you how to make a wonderful salad vinaigrette with some of the fresh herbs growing in the greenhouse.  So come out, smell the fresh produce, feel the warmth of the greenhouse and get your hands dirty!

Don’t forget to watch Northbeat on CBC North Friday, July 5 at 8 PM EDT.  We’ve been told our interview will be shown!

Are you hoping to become an ICGS member, but would prefer to pay online or use a credit card?  We have good news for you!  We have activated our PayPal account and are ready to accept membership fees online.

Go to “Become a Member” and find the forms and payment options available at the bottom of the page.
