Come out Monday from 1 pm to 4 pm to see what’s happening in the greenhouse! Ask questions about our new greenhouse technologies and learn about some of the produce we’re growing. See you there!

The weekend is coming and that means we need your help! Come on out this Saturday from 11 AM to 1 PM to help us clear out the rest of the soil and start breaking down the wooden grow beds.

Sign up at our Facebook event page.

You’ve been asking and now we’re answering. We need volunteers!

The Iqaluit Community Greenhouse will be opening up on Saturday, May 21 from 11 AM to 1 PM for our first work party of the year. In order to clear the soil from the greenhouse to prepare for interior repairs, we need to make some room in our seacan to store it.

We’ll also be looking to distribute items that we have in the seacan to prevent them from going to the landfill. There may be some growing-related items you need to start your own garden at home, so come out and see what we have!

Let us know you’ll be coming out by signing up at our Facebook event page! See you Saturday!

Greenhouse

Just a reminder of tomorrow’s regularly scheduled harvest at 5 PM. We expect there to be loads of produce, including peas, kale, Swiss chard, lettuce and more! See you there…

Welcome to August and (knock on wood!) a bit of summer once more!

With the sun shining brightly, we’ll have to remember to check on the greenhouse to ensure the plants are being watered sufficiently. If you have signed up for the Operations Subcommittee, now’s your time to shine! Sign up for the watering schedule so we can take advantage of the sunshine and kickstart our new plants.

On a more serious note, please ensure that both the front and back doors are closed and locked securely once you leave the greenhouse. If you are having trouble getting the doors to lock, please speak to a board member or let us know via email as soon as possible.

As there has been slower growth with our lettuce crops, we will not be holding today’s supplementary greens harvest. We apologize for the inconvenience, but will see you on Monday, August 10 for our regularly scheduled work party/harvest.

Yesterday, we chatted with APTN’s Kent Driscoll about growing food in Iqaluit. Keep an eye on APTN News in the coming days for his report!

With a bit more water and sunshine, our lettuce crops will be ready for another harvest!

We may not be growing something as spectacular as this flowered Canadian flag, but we think growing our own food in the arctic is still a pretty Canadian thing to do. Come on out to the greenhouse on Canada Day starting at 3 PM. This could be our first harvest of the summer!

And by that, we mean we’ve updated our calendar. You can always see what events are coming up in the sidebar at the right of this page.

See? Right here! In the red box!

Don’t forget about Sunday’s work party at the greenhouse. We’re back into our regular eight day rotation. We’re planting and soon enough, we’ll be harvesting food! Become a member today and take advantage of the freshest veggies in Iqaluit!

The snow is melting and the greenhouse is heating up! It’s almost time to plant.

Things always get busier this time of year. Don’t forget to check out our online calendar. We’ll be adding more events as the summer approaches.

For now, here’s what’s on the agenda…

Saturday, May 16, 11 AM to 1 PM – Work Party

It’s our first work party of the year! Come out to help us prep the soil for planting. We’ll be cleaning up what we can around the greenhouse and working to thaw out our compost in the outdoor bins. You can also sign up for proposed committees and we’ll chat about what we’ll be planting. Become a member if you haven’t yet, too. The temperatures inside the greenhouse are warm enough so that we’re hoping to get some radishes in the beds.

Tuesday, May 19 – Trivia Night (tentative)

We’re still confirming a venue, but we have loads of questions ready to stump you. Help us raise funds to assist with our operating costs. Always a great time and we definitely also think it’s a worthy cause.

Saturday, May 30, 11 AM to 1 PM – Work Party/Full Greenhouse Plant

We’re aiming for our earliest planting in the greenhouse ever. We’ve been monitoring our temperatures for the past couple of seasons and have decided to make this our day. There will be lots of work to do, so come out with your families and join the ICGS this year. We have so many exciting things planned!

Don’t forget – it’s harvest day! Join us at 5:30 to harvest some fresh food for the week.

The ICGS is also beginning a member-based pilot project for composting. Please see below for further information.
